I often rely on the built-in photo editor on my iPhone for quick edits. It’s convenient when I just need to adjust the brightness or tweak a few basic settings. But beyond that, it doesn’t really stand out. I wanted an app that could make photo editing easier while still letting me enhance every detail the way I want. So I started experimenting with different photo-editing apps. Over time, I’ve tried quite a few, both free and paid. The problem is that many paid apps charge steep subscription fees without offering anything truly worth the price. At the same time, a lot of free options feel too limited, either missing important tools or simply not powerful enough to make editing worthwhile.
That’s when I decided to dig deeper and search for something better. After trying several options, I finally found an app that does exactly what I need. It’s free, open-source, and surprisingly capable. It gives me the tools to edit photos properly without complicating the process. What’s even surprising is how well it holds up against some of the more expensive apps out there.

What makes GIMP stand out is that it’s an open-source photo editor. Unlike many modern editing apps, it isn’t controlled by a company that locks important tools behind subscriptions or paid upgrades. On the contrary, the software’s code is publicly available, which means that anyone can inspect how it works, improve it or contribute to its development. That level of transparency often makes open-source tools feel more reliable and trustworthy.
Another advantage of open-source software is the control it gives to users. You’re not constantly nudged toward premium plans or limited by trial versions. Instead, you get full access to the editor and its capabilities right from the start. What makes it even more impressive is that all of this comes at no cost. Despite being completely free, it still offers a powerful set of tools for editing and enhancing images.
Ditch the subscription to keep the creativity
GIMP gives you control without paying a dime
I’ve always turned to Canva when I need more editing options than the built-in tools on my phone or laptop offered. It’s convenient, but there’s always one thing missing: control. I wanted to tweak my images exactly the way I imagined them, not just rely on presets. That’s where GIMP came in and completely changed the game. And the best part is that, unlike Canva, there’s no premium subscription required. It comes packed with powerful editing tools. That alone made switching over an easy choice.
When I use GIMP, most of my edits are very simple. I adjust colors to make a scene pop, add filters when I feel like getting a little dramatic, and make sure the tonal range is just right so nothing looks flat. For example, if I snap a photo on my Google Pixel 10 Pro or iPhone 17, it already looks great, but GIMP lets me enhance the warmth of the sunlight, deepen the shadows, or even give the sky a richer tone. Features like these turn a good picture into a better one.
Even for someone like me who doesn’t edit photos every day, GIMP is surprisingly intuitive. For professional users, there are even more powerful options, such as specialized plugins that can turn the software into a full-fledged pro editing suite. You can handle everything from retouching portraits to crafting complex composites.
GIMP gives you the freedom to edit exactly how you want, while saving money and keeping all the creative control in your hands.
There’s still a learning curve
Your creative adventure starts with a challenge

GIMP definitely offers impressive features, but it’s not the easiest software to learn right away. The default multi-window layout can feel confusing at first, with tools, layers, and dialogs scattered all over the screen. Switching to a single-window mode makes it much more manageable and less intimidating. When I first started, I also checked out a few YouTube tutorials, which helped me understand the app better. Once you get the hang of it, using GIMP starts to feel natural, and sometimes it can also outperform Photoshop for certain edits.
That said, GIMP is not perfect. Coming from Canva, which is neatly organized and very easy to understand, GIMP can definitely feel clunky and overwhelming at first. It’s definitely not the kind of software that feels effortless the moment you open it. There’s a learning curve, and some design choices could be improved to make the experience smoother.
Another limitation to keep in mind is device support. GIMP is only available on macOS, Windows, and Linux, so there are no iOS and Android apps. If you love editing on the go, this can be a dealbreaker. For me, editing on a bigger screen works just fine, but mobile users will need to rely on other apps for editing.
So, GIMP does come with a learning curve, a slightly messy interface, and limited cross-device support. If you’re willing to invest some time learning it, the results can be incredible.
