A couple of minutes earlier than 2PM ET on Monday, the crew of Artemis II broke a report set 56 years in the past by the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission — at over 248,655 miles, they’ve now traveled farther from Earth than any people earlier than them. They marked the event with a crater naming ceremony that left the entire crew embracing one another in lunar orbit.
The Artemis II crew proposed names for 2 craters on the Moon. The primary they named after their spacecraft, Integrity. The second was extra private. “Various years in the past, we began this journey and our close-knit astronaut household, and we misplaced a beloved one,” mission specialist Jeremy Hansen stated throughout NASA’s livestream. “Her title was Carroll, the partner of Reid, the mom of Katie and Ellie.”
Hansen described a crater that’s “a vivid spot on the Moon” and introduced, “We wish to name it Carroll.” As Hansen concluded the announcement, the crew gathered round in Integrity to share a hug. Carroll Wiseman was commander Reid Wiseman’s spouse and died from most cancers in 2020 at 46 years outdated.
