Amy Madigan gained an Oscar for her startling flip as Aunt Gladys in Zach Cregger’s genre-flipping creepfest, however don’t maintain your breath ready for her to look. After a category of 17 elementary faculty youngsters (save one) vanish in a single day, we first observe the overlapping tales of these caught up within the aftermath – from trainer Justine (Julia Garner) and Josh Brolin’s grieving dad or mum Archer to cop Paul (Alden Ehrenreich) and sole remaining pupil Alex (Cary Christopher). It’s a seductive jigsaw puzzle, which examines how the loss of a kid can descend into rage and recrimination – however it’s not till the malevolent Madigan turns up that the ultimate, ugly piece is put in place.
