LONDON — A life jacket worn by a passenger on RMS Titanic as she escaped the sinking steamship on a lifeboat offered at public sale on Saturday for 670,00 kilos ($906,000).
The flotation system was worn by Laura Mabel Francatelli, a first-class passenger on the doomed ocean liner, and is signed by her and different survivors from the identical lifeboat.

It was the star amongst gadgets in a sale of Titanic memorabilia by Henry Aldridge & Son auctioneers in Devizes, western England, and offered to an unidentified phone bidder for properly over the presale estimate of between 250,000 and 350,000 kilos.
A seat cushion from one of many Titanic lifeboats offered on the similar public sale for 390,000 kilos ($527,000) to the house owners of two Titanic museums in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, and Branson, Missouri.
The costs embody an auction-house price generally known as the customer’s premium.
“These record-breaking costs illustrate the persevering with curiosity within the Titanic story, and the respect for the passengers and crew whose tales are immortalized by this stuff of memorabilia,” auctioneer Andrew Aldridge stated.
Billed because the world’s most luxurious ocean liner and described as “virtually unsinkable,” the Titanic hit an iceberg off Newfoundland throughout its maiden voyage from England to New York. It sank inside hours on April 15, 1912. Some 1,500 of the two,200 passengers and crew died.
The Titanic remains to be a topic of worldwide fascination, partly due to the vary of passengers aboard the ship, from paupers to plutocrats.
Francatelli was touring together with her employer, designer Lucy Duff Gordon, and Lucy’s husband Cosmo Duff Gordon. All three survived within the ship’s lifeboat No. 1, which was launched carrying 12 individuals regardless of having capability for 40. Its failure to choose up survivors from the frigid water turned a supply of controversy.
The report public sale worth for a chunk of Titanic memorabilia is 1.56 million kilos (virtually $2 million on the time) paid in 2024 for a gold pocket watch given to the captain of RMS Carpathia, the ship that rescued 700 Titanic survivors.
