Netflix is the streaming service that boasts the most original movies and shows, but to make room for the new stuff, some of the material that you’ve always wanted to see—and have had on your to-watch list for months—must depart.
That’s because Netflix doesn’t own everything it streams. Its contracts with networks, production companies, and movie studios mean its programming constantly shifts. So, each month, we bring you up to date with a list of what’s going to disappear and highlight our top choices for what you should watch in March before they’re gone. This month sees mostly movies going away, so here’s what you should get on your watchlist while there’s time.
Brightburn (March 1)
2019’s Brightburn was a real family affair, with James Gunn, his brother, and his cousin all involved in its writing and production. Based on the irresistible tagline of “what if Superman was a sociopath,” it follows the story of a young boy who comes crashing to Earth, develops superhuman powers, and then is morally destroyed by puberty, like all of us. It’s become a cult classic since its release, with viewers appreciating its subversive spin on the overstuffed genre.
Director: David Yarovesky
Cast: Jackson Dunn, Elizabeth Banks, David Denman
Genre: Horror
Rating: R
IMDb Rating: 6.1/10
The Talented Mr. Ripley (March 13)
If you haven’t seen The Talented Mr. Ripley, it’s one of Matt Damon’s best movies and really showcases his range. He plays amoral scammer Thomas Ripley, who takes $1,000 to travel to Europe and convince a rich kid to come home to America. Because he’s a bad person, Ripley ends up killing him and assuming his identity, leading to an escalating series of terrible events.
Director: Anthony Minghella
Cast: Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow
Genre: Thriller
Rating: R
IMDb Rating: 7.4/10
Wrath Of Man (Feb. 25)
Guy Ritchie is one of our favorite guilty pleasure directors. His movies aren’t “good” by any objective metric, but they’re always fun, and 2021’s Wrath Of Man is no exception. Teaming up once more with Jason Statham (a guilty pleasure actor if there ever was one), he delivers a tale of an armored truck robbery that flashes back multiple times to explore how the participants got there and the dirty secrets in their pasts.
